Mulch

Free garden mulch is all around us. We may just have to think out of the box.
Let’s face it. When it comes to planting the spring flower beds and getting your landscaping up to par, one of the most costly aspects is mulch. The good news is that you can easily make free mulch yourself by simply recycling ordinary items you use and throw away every day.

The first step is to determine where your mulch pile will be. This is important because it will need to be in an area where you don’t mind leaving rotting organic materials. Next, begin gathering organic materials. It is much easier to begin a mulch pile in fall as dead leaves make a great base, however other organic materials such as grass clippings, chipped limbs and twigs from an assortment of trees (pine, cedar, and cypress wood work well). Next, add other organic elements to the mulch pile such as shredded newspaper and eggshells.

Simply layer the ingredients and turn occasionally, allowing the materials to begin to decompose. Within a few months, your mulch will be ready to use.

If making your own mulch isn’t practical for this spring’s planting, you can also obtain free mulch from a variety of sources including landscaping companies, local greenhouses and nurseries and even the occasional lawn and garden retail establishment. Be prepared to spend a little time getting to know the landscapers in your community. In many cases, landscapers will purchase mulch on a job by job basis and oftentimes they will have some leftover after a job is completed. Offer to clean up and haul the mulch away for free. Homeowners who have recently had mulch delivered for do-it-yourself landscaping are also a great resource for finding free mulch. Offer your services in much the same manner as you would to a landscaper. You will be surprised at the number of individuals who will take you up on your offer.
