Grow Your Own Dried Flower Arrangements
There is nothing more beautiful than a dried flower arrangement, and as we approach the end of the growing season for many flower gardens, why not preserve some of the flowers at home?
There are a couple of ways to dry flowers with the easiest being the air dry method. Time is the key to the success of this method. Cut flowers when the flower is half open, leaving the flower face on the stem. It is better to leave a decent length of stem, about 6 inches or less, in order to prepare properly later. Gently remove the bottom leaves from the stems, but leave the leaves closest to the flower head intact. Bunch in groups of eight to ten and hang them upside down in a well ventilated area. In warm climates, this can be almost anywhere, indoors or out. In colder climates, it is best to hang in a warm, dry and dark, like a rarely used closet. The drying process takes about ten days.
If you prefer not to have bunches of flowers hanging around your home, you can dry your flowers with the box method. Partially fill a cardboard box with sand or borax. Place cut flowers in the box, face down and cover with more sand or borax. Place the box in a warm, dry place for two weeks. Then remove the flowers. They should be dried.
After drying, spray the flowers with hairspray. This will give an additional layer of protection against the elements and give them a touch of brightness.
Place the freshly dried flowers at any number of configurations to please, fill cups, glass bowls, or for use in arts and crafts. Try to keep out of direct sunlight and away from extreme heat (dry flowers in general, I like to spend much time in the kitchen or bathroom). With proper precautions, you do not have to worry about these flowers that need any attention, dying or losing their luster, as it will provide timeless beauty to any decor throughout the winter.
