Grow Your Own Detox Drink

It’s no secret that our bodies produce toxic wastes as it performs all the necessary functions that keep us going day in and day out. There are tons of products on the market that are designed to help our bodies rid themselves of all these nasty substances; it’s a billion dollar industry. But did you know that many of these products can be made cheaply and more effectively right in your own kitchen?

That’s right. The ingredients used to create detox drinks can be grown right in your garden simply and inexpensively.

People detox for several different reasons, though the most common is to lose weight and promote a healthy digestive system. Most people report feeling healthier and more revitalized after completing a detox program.

The main idea behind most detox products is the rawer and fresher, the better. Foods need to remember where they came from in order to have the properties necessary to detox the body. Most detox programs include:

Organic foods and drinks
Whole, raw or unprocessed ingredients
Lots of water

The most basic detox drink known is the lemon water drink. It is comprised of exactly two ingredients, lemon and warm water. Take half a lemon and squeeze it into a 16oz glass of warm water and drink. This drink will make up the starting phase of about half the detox programs on the market today.

You can purchase fresh lemons from any grocery store, but growing fruit trees can be very rewarding. Young trees can be found in any lawn and garden retail establishment and are the easiest to grow, but trees can be started from seeds as well.

Herbal detox can occur by combining certain herbs into a “tea” and consuming. Based on which organ system you are targeting, different herbs will need to be applied in different combinations. For instance, kidneys will benefit from a combination of Uva ursi, parsley, dandelion, juniper berries JP-X Parsley, uva ursi, marshmallow, ginger, goldenseal, dong quai, cedar berries, while the lungs get a boost from a combination of LH Comfrey, marshmallow, mullein, slippery elm, senega, Chinese ephedra.

Herbal teas offer great detox benefits, especially when specific herbs such as dandelion, licorice, and ginger are introduced.

A well-rounded herb garden will be most beneficial in helping you to begin creating detox drinks on your own. Most herbs can be grown alongside vegetables or fruits in an outside garden as climatic and soil conditions are very similar. For smaller, indoor gardens, it is best to use a potting soil/fertilizer mixture and allow for plenty of sunlight.
